6th Social Studies:  

     6th grade social studies will explore many concepts and skills related to the subject which includes history, geography, civics/ government, and economics. Students will learn about and examine primary and secondary sources, as well as the archaeological process, in an effort to help them understand questions such as, “How do we know what we know about the past?” Students will also learn about basic geographical concepts and examine ancient systems of government, while also exploring what it means to be an active citizen within their own community. Students will learn about the basic elements of culture and apply these concepts to the ancient world, as well as their own society. We will explore ancient civilizations including Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and the Americas. Students will learn concepts in social studies through simulations, reading and writing activities, presentations, demonstrations, discussions, and debates. The class will work on developing, through the curriculum, their independent work strategies and their group communication skills. 

Current Events: 
     Current Events are events that are presently happening locally, nationally, and internationally (world). We will examine issues that are important to students and issues that affect the world and our livelihood. Students will learn and examine events through many different media means. These include magazines, video, online articles, and/or other print and digital mediums. Students will practice a variety of skills that include 21st literacy skills, problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration.  These skills could be practiced through activities such as reading with meaning, writing to learn, debates, and web page design.
