Social Studies

Hello! I have been teaching at Crested Butte Community School since 2005 where I started out as substitute teacher and eventually was hired on as a full-time instructor. I grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and attended college at the University of Kansas where I earned a degree in modern European history and a degree in secondary social studies with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction.  I currently teach American history, film as art, and American government.

Critical thinking and active learning are at the core of my educational philosophy. Students learn best when they are having fun, which is the essence of the activities which support learning in my classroom. Simulations, debates, and mock trials provide the experiences that allow for student growth. Important historical questions drive our learning community where we seek to connect the past with the present. The students are given opportunities to explore their own ideas and  develop important academic and social skills. Students have the opportunity to evaluate their own learning and progress and to practice presenting their findings with the other members of the learning community.
